Google Search Console for a new site

Google Search Console is the free tool reporting what a search engine did with your website, what it can and can't tell you, and who owns the account.

In short. Google Search Console reports what a search engine actually did with a website: what it crawled, what it indexed, what it excluded and why, and which queries produced impressions. It is free, it is the only reliable instrument for diagnosing an indexing problem, and the account should be owned by the business rather than by whoever built the site.

Google Search Console is a free Google tool that reports what Google actually did with a website: which addresses it crawled, which it stored, which it excluded and for what stated reason, which Google searches produced impressions and clicks, and which addresses returned errors.

That is a narrow and unusually reliable set of facts about Google search performance. Every other source of information about a site’s Google search performance is an inference from outside; a Search Console property is a report from Google itself.

It is also the Google account most often created in a hurry, on whichever Google login was closest to hand, which is a commercial decision nobody records.

What your Search Console property reports about urls and verification

ReportAnswers
Page indexingWas this address crawled, was it indexed, and if not why
PerformanceWhich queries produced impressions and clicks, and at what average position
SitemapsHow many submitted addresses were actually indexed
URL inspectionThe current status of one specific address
Core Web VitalsField measurements of loading, layout stability and responsiveness
Manual actionsWhether a human reviewer has taken action against the site

The page indexing report is the one that matters most at launch, because it converts “we are not on Google” from an opinion into a stated reason.

What it does not tell you

Everything. Query data is sampled and filtered, so the totals are a floor rather than a count.

Why you rank where you do. It reports position, not cause.

What to do next. It is an instrument, not an adviser.

Anything about other search engines. Bing operates its own equivalent, and assistant products largely publish nothing comparable at all — which is one of the honest limits discussed on AI search and a small business website.

The Google Search Console account, domains and property ownership question

This is the part of the page with commercial consequences.

An account created on a supplier’s personal login is an account that leaves when the relationship does, and the historical data leaves with it. That history is not recoverable: a new account starts reporting from the day it is verified and knows nothing about the years before.

The correct arrangement is straightforward and is worth insisting on at the start, because retrofitting it later is only possible while the current supplier is cooperative.

  1. The business holds the account, on a business-controlled login, not a personal one.
  2. Verification is done through a method the business can maintain — a DNS record on a domain the business controls is the most durable.
  3. The supplier is added as a user with the access they need, and removed when the engagement ends.

The same principle applies to the analytics account, the domain registrar login for all of a business’s domains, the hosting account and the platform administrator account. Which of those a business actually holds is the single most useful audit it can do, and the wider ownership picture across domains is on website ownership.

Verifying your Search Console property against a domain, briefly: http, https and submit

Verification proves control of the domain. Several methods exist in the Google Search Console help centre; the differences that matter are durability and who can undo them.

A DNS-record verification survives a site rebuild, a platform change and a hosting move, because it is attached to the domain itself rather than to any one property. A file uploaded to the site or a tag added to a template does not survive a rebuild, which is why sites frequently lose verification during exactly the project where they most need it.

Verifying the domain, rather than a single address, also collects every variant into one Search Console property. For example, verifying example.com.au as a domain property covers https://example.com.au, http://example.com.au, https://www.example.com.au, http://www.example.com.au and any subdomain automatically. A URL-prefix property verified only against https://example.com.au will not automatically cover https://www.example.com.au or the http versions of the same domain — each would need its own separate property unless the domain-level property is used instead. That distinction between a domain property and a URL-prefix property is useful for the reasons set out on one page at several addresses.

What to do with your Search Console account in the first months

Four things, in order.

  • Submit the sitemap and then compare submitted against indexed. That single ratio is the fastest read on whether the site is being taken up.
  • Read the excluded reasons. They are specific: excluded by a noindex instruction, duplicate with a different canonical, crawled and not indexed. Each points at a different fix.
  • Watch the error report for addresses being requested that no longer exist. After a rebuild this is how missing redirects surface, which is the failure described on the redirect map.
  • Read the query report for what people actually searched before arriving. It is frequently different from what the business assumed, and it is better evidence than any keyword tool because it is your own audience.

What it is not a substitute for

Two limits, both of which are misunderstood in the same direction.

It reports one search engine. Bing operates its own equivalent with its own data, and assistant products largely publish nothing comparable, so a business reading only this account is reading one channel and calling it the whole picture.

And it reports arrivals, not outcomes. A page can gain impressions and clicks for months while producing no enquiries, which is a content and conversion problem the console cannot see. The only measure that settles whether a website is working is whether the business is contacted, and that number is usually counted in an inbox rather than in a dashboard.

The measurement point

A search console is what makes the claims elsewhere in this section checkable. Whether the site was built to be crawlable, whether the redirects worked, whether the staging instruction was removed: all three are visible in one place, for free, in the first fortnight after launch.

A business that owns this account can verify its supplier’s work without hiring anyone to interpret it. That is the argument for insisting on ownership, and it is the same argument this site makes about pricing data and about sources — on how this site measures things.

What to do next

Find out today whose account your site is verified under, and on what login. If the answer is “the person who built it”, that is the item to fix while the relationship is good rather than after it ends. Where an ongoing arrangement exists, reviewing these reports belongs in it, which is on the maintenance page.
