Website copywriting as a piece of work

Website copywriting: the words, treated as a commission rather than a form to fill in. What a copywriter needs, and where AI copy helps or hurts.

In short. Copywriting is the decision about what each page says and to whom, not the act of filling in text after the design is finished. It is the most common reason a build stalls, and the cheapest thing you can influence by supplying voice memos and old enquiry emails rather than a blank page.

Website copywriting is the decision about what each page says, in what order, and to whom. It is not the act of filling in the text once the design is finished. By the time a design exists, most of the copywriting decisions have already been made by whoever chose the layout, and made without knowing your customers.

Measured for Australia on 31 July 2026 and recorded in research/national-volume-au.json and research/cpc-competition-au.json, “website copywriting” draws 260 searches a month at a keyword difficulty of 0. Competition is recorded as LOW, at an index of 7. The alias “website copywriting services” adds 140 a month, also at difficulty 0. research/ai-vol-keywords.json records 13 prompts a month to AI assistants for the term. Difficulty 0 across a commercial cluster means almost nobody has competed for it properly, which is roughly how the work itself tends to be treated.

Why website copy is where builds stall

Abstract illustration of a page waiting for words, shown as a blank rectangle transitioning left to right into a rectangle filled with short horizontal lines.

Ask any developer what delays projects and the answer is not design approval or technical problems. It is waiting for the words.

The pattern that stalls a build

The pattern is consistent. Copy is excluded from the quote, often in a single line nobody reads closely. The client agrees, because writing about your own business sounds like a Sunday afternoon’s work. The design is approved with placeholder text. Then the client sits down to write and discovers that describing what you do to a stranger is genuinely difficult. The project stops for six weeks, while a developer who has scheduled the build elsewhere waits.

What follows from that pattern

Two things follow. First, if a quote does not say who writes the website copy, assume it is you, and be honest about whether you will. Second, if you know you will not, commissioning a copywriter separately at the start is cheaper than discovering the gap in week five, because the design can then be built to real text.

What a website copywriter needs from you

A writer cannot invent the parts of your business only you know. What they need is unglamorous and takes about two hours to assemble.

Access to you, or to whoever talks to customers

Abstract illustration of a spoken account rather than a written brief, shown as a simple waveform glyph.

An hour on the phone with the person who answers the phone is worth more than any brief.

The questions customers actually ask

Supply these in the customer’s own words, from before they buy.

The objections

What makes people hesitate, and what you say in response.

What you do that the alternative does not

State this as a specific rather than as a claim.

Facts

Service areas, hours, licences, registrations, process steps, timeframes, what is and is not included.

Claims you are allowed to make, claims you are not, and any industry rules that apply to how you advertise.

A rough draft, however bad

A page of your own plain sentences gives a writer your voice and your priorities. Editing that is faster and less expensive than starting from nothing.

Writing for a customer and writing for a search engine have converged

Abstract illustration of reader and search engine meeting at one page, shown as two arrows converging on one shared page-block from different directions.

They used to pull in opposite directions. Search rewarded repetition of a phrase, and readers punished it. That trade-off is largely gone.

Why one page can now do both jobs

Search systems now work on meaning rather than string matching, and they increasingly assess whether a page satisfies the question that produced the visit. A page that answers a question completely, in specific language, with the details a person actually needed, is now the same page that performs in search. There is no separate version to write for a search engine.

What still matters from the old discipline

What remains from the old discipline is placement, not density. The subject of the page belongs in the title, in the first heading and in the opening sentences. That is where both a reader and a machine look to decide what the page is about. Beyond that, writing naturally about a subject produces the related terms on its own.

Describing a service, versus answering a question

Abstract illustration of moving from describing to answering, shown as a question-mark glyph transitioning into a checkmark glyph.

This is the difference between a page that reads acceptably and a page that does work.

The descriptive page

A descriptive page says what the service is, lists its features, and closes with an invitation to contact. It is accurate and it is inert, because it answers a question nobody asked.

The answering page

An answering page starts from what the person was actually trying to find out. Usually it is one of five things: can you do my specific situation, how long does it take, what does it cost or what drives the cost, what happens if it goes wrong, and why should I believe you. A page built on those, with real specifics rather than reassurance, converts attention into contact because it removes the reasons to keep looking.

A practical test for your own draft

Read your draft and count the sentences a competitor could publish verbatim without changing a word. Those sentences are doing nothing.

What to supply, starting with your voice, to reduce the cost

Copywriting is priced largely by how much has to be extracted from you and how much has to be created from nothing. You control both.

Record a voice memo per page describing that service as you would explain it on the phone to a customer who does not know your trade. Send the last twenty enquiry emails with names removed, which is the plainest available record of how customers phrase things. Send your existing material, marked with what is still true. List the facts a writer would otherwise have to ask for twice. Nominate one person to give feedback, because copy edited by committee costs more in revision rounds than it does in first draft.

How website copywriting revisions usually work

Most copywriting is sold with a defined number of revision rounds, commonly one or two, with further work billed hourly. A round means all of your feedback on all pages, delivered together, once. It does not mean unlimited individual amendments over a fortnight, and treating it that way is how a fixed price becomes an hourly one.

Give feedback as a problem rather than a solution wherever you can. “This does not mention that we come out same day, which is the main reason people choose us” is actionable. “Make it punchier” is not.

Also agree what happens if the direction changes after approval. A rewrite because your service offering changed is new work, and it is better to say so at the start than to argue about it later.

What search-led website copywriting does and does not mean

It should mean this: the subject of each page was chosen because there is measurable demand for it, and the page is written to satisfy that demand completely. The title and headings say plainly what the page is about, and the page links sensibly to the other pages it relates to.

It should not mean a target phrase repeated to a quota, a word count set by a tool rather than by the subject, near-identical pages produced for each suburb, or any promise about position. Nobody can promise a ranking, and a supplier who does is telling you something about the rest of their work.

If demand is being used to choose subjects, ask where the numbers came from and when they were measured. The measurements behind this site are named on each page and stored in research/, and the method is set out in how this site measures things.

AI-generated website copy, honestly

It is useful, and it is not a substitute for the job of a real website copywriter.

What AI copy does well

First drafts of structure. Rewriting a paragraph you have already written into something tidier. Summarising your own material. Producing variations of a headline to react against. Generating a list of questions your customers might ask, as a starting point for asking them properly. For a business owner staring at a blank page, it is a genuine unblocking tool, and using it to produce raw material a writer then shapes is sensible.

What AI copy does badly

It does not know your business, so it produces the generic middle of your industry — precisely the material that makes one site indistinguishable from another. It invents specifics with total confidence, which is a real risk when the specifics are licence claims, timeframes or inclusions that Australian Consumer Law holds you to. It has no access to your actual customers’ language, only to the average of everyone else’s. And it defaults to a recognisable cadence that a growing number of readers now notice.

The workable position

Use AI to get unstuck and to draft, then apply the parts only you can supply: the specifics, the objections and the voice. If the finished page could belong to any competitor, the tool has produced text rather than copy.

For how this fits alongside the rest of a build, see scoping a small business site. For what happens to a package figure when copywriting is excluded from it, see what a package includes and excludes.
